Conventions of Indie Genre

From our research we identified these typical conventions of indie music videos:
  • a mixture of performance and narrative in the video
  • the narrative is usually shot in a different location to the performance
  • locations are usually outdoors and urban
  • close ups of the band members and instruments used to sell the band's identity and the use of instruments in indie music
  • the narrative is usually addressing a personal issue rather than a widespread issue, as young audiences can relate to these kinds of issues (like relationships)
  • the behaviour of the band and their sense of fashion are individual to and identifiable of the indie genre

These are the typical conventions we identified of indie digipaks:
  • they shows images of the band members in them
  • they tend to show the list of tracks on the back
  • they often have an ongoing theme running throughout the digipak e.g. a colour or image

These are the typical conventions of indie magazine adverts:
  • they often include similar images, fonts, and themes in the advert as in the digipak, as this means the audience can identify the band
  • they often include an image of the band
